Installing Zend Server CE on Ubuntu 10.4 - 07/20/2010 - 9:40am

Recently, I started building a new test server here in the office. Trying to install Zend CE server on Ubuntu 10.4 is not easy if you use the default instructions. So here is the one change that seems to make it work correctly. Add this to your repository besides the one listed in the instructions:

Opting Out of Google Analytics - 07/16/2010 - 10:06am

There is a portion of the Internet population who does not want to be tracked on a website.... or does not trust Google. Many websites we create use Google Analytics to help our clients figure out who visits their website. At the same time we support the choose that some people need the option to opt out of being followed around. Google has created a browser plugin for those who wish to be anonymous.

Firefox 4 - 07/07/2010 - 11:57pm

Many of you might be using Mozilla's Firefox web browser as you look at my site (it is one of the top three web browsers on the market). I recently found that Firefox 4 is now in official beta and ready for you to try it out (great opportunity for those fans not happen with version 3.5 or 3.6). You can download it at http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/beta/ .

Firefox 4 promises HTML 5, improved CSS, stability (this is always promised in new browsers), and a whole slew of things. If your not tied to certain add-ons working and having problems in Windows 7... Give it a try.

Embedding HTML into Gmail - 06/24/2010 - 11:29am

Gmail has become one of the most popular free email services on the net (especially with small businesses). Using nicer looking html emails to communicate is a feature that gmail seems to lack. There is a way to get around this drawback...

  1. Create a web page. Use Google Sites or your favorite web page making software (Dreamweaver). Do not use background images with css; instead make sure all images are using <img> tags (for most people you will hit image and go from there). After you are done... view the page in your web browser. Highlight all the content in the web page and copy it (or ctrl and C).
  2. Gmail. Go to Gmail and compose a new email. Paste your copied web page content into the email. Your new email should show the same content as the web page you copied. Now you can hit send.

Let me know if this worked for you.

Be found locally - 06/18/2010 - 12:50pm

A very important thing for small businesses who are trying to be found... is to be found locally. The three major search engines have section devoted to small local businesses (hopefully with a website of their own).

Go to http://www.yellostudio.co.uk/scrapbook/2010/04/02/optimise-your-website-for-local-search.html and let me know if this helped you out?
